I just recovered from strep throat and it was terrible. Luckily it doesn't last long.

Having kitchen counter tops replaced is a much bigger and messier endeavor than I had imagined.

For the first time I'm playing in a band. I don't know what exactly to call the type of music but I've heard it described as power pop, psychedelic or mod. The band has been around for several years and has a loyal following. After their keyboardist moved to a different city, I was asked by my friend, the bandleader, to fill the void. We have a big gig this Friday night.

It's a very strange experience performing a song with a group. It's like jumping onto a moving airplane and being one of the pilots and if you screw something up or are not in exact sync with the other pilots, the plane will crash. I've performed solo before and found that much easier as I controlled the tempo, modulation and inflections. If I wanted to and a trill of notes for an extra measure, I could do that. Not with a band. If there's a missed chord change, a bum note or an out-of-sync rhythm by anyone, it's musical disaster. Everything has to be perfect to specific guidelines. When everything works, it's great and those are the kinds of performances audiences remember fondly. Our last rehearsal went by excellently and we have one more before Friday to solidify our performance, but I'm still quite nervous.

California has a lovely climate, but earthquakes can make it horrible. What's happening in Japan is a reminder. I don't know if I want to live here.

I'm absolutely hating work this week. Sad thing is, I can't really blame my co-workers because they're all really cool and helpful. I suppose I just hate the job and when it gets busy, I'm extremely annoyed with it and only desire the day to end.

My downstairs neighbor's condo was broken into this morning. They took a whole bunch of valuable items including a vintage bass (she was a bassist in a famous band). The police think it wasn't random and her place was targeted. It's very unsettling. I'm concerned for leaving my place for any reason out of fear someone is staking it.

There's snow in the local hills. That's just wrong.

We've had 6 straight days of rain here and that's rare. It just ended tonight which means the air tomorrow will be unusually crisp and clear (it's usually hazy and smoggy). Lucky for me I'm working tomorrow from the 28th floor of a building in Burbank and I'll take plenty of pictures.

For the first time in my life I actually bet sizable money on something. Well for me, $100 is a sizable betting amount. I was in the gym arguing with an old wealthy conservative blow-hard about the election. He said his son-in-law did coke with Jerry Brown when they served in the state Assembly in the 70's. I retorted that Jerry Brown never served in the Assembly (although I believe he did coke). He asked me how much I want to make a bet. I said a hundred dollars.

I looked it up. I should have said a thousand.

I will collect on Friday.

I was in Christchuch last year and thought it a nice little city. Not particularly beautiful (besides the parks), but pleasant with a tad feeling of a frontier city. I've posted some of these before. Here are some pre-earthquake pics...Collapse )

The Diznee studio commissary has dissipated in quality over the years (not to mention got more expensive). I almost vomited today's meal.

I was at the ranch over the weekend. Even though it was relatively cold and rainy, it was still lovely.

However I felt a small jolt of pain in the inside bend of my arm all Sunday. It felt like i banged it and it was probably black and blue. As i had long sleeves on all day, i couldn't see. That evening when I was changing shirts (i was there for a birthday party), i saw on my arm a dark black spot where the pain was coming from. The spot had tiny legs. It was a tick that buried itself into my arm. Almost instantly I yanked the fucker out. I hear that you need to do that carefully in order to pull the entire thing out or its bite my remain on whatever its biting into. Maybe it was my will, but I got the entire body out. It didn't look like a deer tick, the type most commonly associated with lyme disease, but it still freaked me out. I have no idea how the tick got on me. I never when into the brush. Even if i happened across a plant with this tick on it, how didn't end up halfway up my arm under a sleeve (ticks tend to latch onto whatever body part they happened to luck on to).

Anyway, I called my doctor who prescribed a one-time dosage of antibiotics, took some and I almost fainted for about a half hour afterwords. I guess I don't react well to those things.

So if I have lyme disease, I'll start having fevers in about a week. I don't need this right now.

Last night I attended an art opening in Hollywood that my friend B had a couple of pieces in (Wickedmerlot, you've met him). It was called Kitsch 'N Sync. The event was huge. About 150 artists were represented. There might've been 1,000 people there cramped into a relatively small space. Some of it was really cool, some curious. Examples...Collapse )
